1. Both do the important stuff

Pace, distance, structured workouts, training history. Either brand can help you follow a marathon plan and keep track of the work.

The catch? You still have to follow the plan. If you turn every easy run into a race, your watch will happily record that questionable decision in impressive detail.

2. Battery life is a legitimate reason to care

If you’re heading out for an ultra, GPS battery life matters. If you’re running a few miles before work, it mostly matters whether you remembered to charge it.

Some COROS models offer particularly long battery life. Compare the actual watches and settings, though. GPS, music and screen choices can change those numbers considerably.

3. Garmin has some useful little luxuries

Compatible Garmin models let you download Spotify playlists and pay for your post-run coffee. If leaving your phone at home sounds good, those features might genuinely improve your morning.

Will they improve your marathon time? Probably not. But buying a bagel with your wrist is a perfectly respectable ambition.

4. Getting lost isn’t a brand preference

Both brands offer models with maps. Navigation features vary, so check whether the watch does what you need on unfamiliar routes.

For your usual neighborhood loop, this might be irrelevant. Somewhere with three unmarked trail forks and no phone signal? Suddenly quite relevant.

5. Your recovery score doesn’t know everything

These watches calculate readiness and recovery differently. Treat the numbers as useful information, then check in with yourself.

Poor sleep? Heavy legs? A week that’s taken more out of you than expected? That counts. You don’t have to negotiate with a tiny screen for permission to take it easy.

Bottom line

I use a COROS. You might prefer a Garmin. There are good reasons to choose either, and enjoying a new gadget is allowed, too.

Just be honest about what you’re buying. If your current watch tracks your runs, guides your workouts and lasts long enough, you may already be sorted.

Keep the watch. Go for the run. Get the bagel.
