It was wet. It was gray. And for a lot of runners at the Staten Island Half, it was a tough day at the office.
By the time runners reached us at the final turn, they had already done the work. Miles in the rain. Hills. Heavy legs. Plans that may or may not have gone the way they imagined.
But they kept moving.
Asian Trail Mix and Proof Running set up our cheer zone just 0.3 miles from the finish. Close enough that runners could almost see the end, but far enough that there was still one last push to make.
That’s where the noise matters.
You could see people change when they heard their names. Heads came up. Smiles appeared. Paces picked up. Sometimes all it takes is someone on the side of the road reminding you that you’re almost there — and that somebody sees the work you’re doing.
Cheering might seem like a small part of race day, but to us, it’s a big part of running.
Community isn’t only about running together. It’s showing up when someone else is doing the hard thing. Standing in the rain. Losing your voice. Celebrating the fast runners, the first-timers, the runners having the race of their lives and the ones fighting for every step.
We want our runners to know they never have to do all of this alone.
Sometimes we run.
Sometimes we cheer.
Sometimes we coach.
That was Staten Island.
See you at the next one.
